Recently a friend lost some very important documents. She checked all the usual places, especially where she thought she had hidden them, and felt so frustrated to not be able to find them. However, in just a few hours, they turned up. They were right where she had put them, only concealed in a disguising way.
Upon hearing her good news, I started contemplating the difference between something being lost, versus its whereabouts being temporarily uncertain or unknown. I guess it all depends on how you want to look at it, because either could be considered true. Perspective is everything.
There have been times in my life when I felt lost and my purpose felt disguised or hidden. I have lived seasons where things were unknown and uncertain, but I have never been truly lost. There’s a big difference between being lost and just not knowing where we are going yet.
The calmer we can stay when things appear to be lost, especially if we’re the ones who appear to be lost, the better we can start noticing the clues we need to find our way. Staying calm and tuned in helps us notice the indicators telling us everything is unfolding exactly right.
Things often make sense backwards, don't they? In hindsight, we have greater understanding, like my friend who lost her documents, but then found them exactly where she put them for safekeeping. And although she couldn’t find them for a while, they were still in a very safe space.
Can we choose to believe that about ourselves, wherever we are right now? Perhaps the future is unclear, but can we trust that we are in a safe space? That we are exactly where we need to be until more is revealed?
When we are in the middle of it, how can we make the best use of a season filled with uncertainty? Some possibilities might include: good self-care (always), exploring a hobby, reading a good book, studying self-improvement principles, researching a city or a job that has always intrigued us, or taking a course to advance our career skills. Being still, journaling, praying, meditating and resting are also helpful for seeking clarity.
Wherever you are today, I hope you will acknowledge and celebrate that you are not lost. You are safe, exactly where you’re supposed to be, receiving the lessons needed for your next steps, and possessing the ability to make the most of every moment.
Today, if you’re struggling with any aspect about your life, perhaps a small perspective shift will help you find peace.
