Just seven days later, I was passing by again with anticipation of enjoying the fall tree again. I couldn't believe the dramatic change that had happened in such a short time. Nearly all the leaves were gone.
I felt sad but also incredibly grateful that I was blessed to see it in all its glory the previous week. I stopped to capture this contrasting view so I could illustrate the spiritual download that happened as soon as I saw the barren tree.
Some gifts are fleeting and we have to soak them up when they present themselves, or we may not get a second chance. As the holidays approach, we must keep watch for the magical moments so easily taken for granted and overlooked.
It's easy to take notice of sitting down to a beautiful and bountiful Thanksgiving feast. What about the less obvious, but possibly even more special moments, like an unexpected conversation while putting the leftover food away? Or a chat among the last two people left at the table? Maybe a nugget of wisdom casually handed down from an elder who may not be here next year?
Be present. Put the phones down. Soak it all up!
Many of us will experience a quieter, different holiday. Let's soak that up too and look for what's special about it. Don't let one single gift escape your attention.
Our annual holiday intentions may be, "Let's make some special memories," and that's great, but special memories are being made every day. The question is, are we noticing them?
Happy Thanksgiving. May your gifts be plentiful, and your eyes and hearts wide open.
