On a recent walk in Arizona, I came upon these white trees in an industrial park. I’ve never seen anything like it. I confess I leaned in close to smell one and scratch it to see if by chance it had been painted. That’s how unusual it was to me. But it seemed to be organic
and authentic.
I have since done some research and it seems that painting trees white is a practice to protect certain young trees in the southwest. Usually, however, they are only painted at the bottom. These were white all the way up, so I'm believing they were genuine.
I couldn’t stop staring at these trees. I took several photos, despite my recent disclaimer that we should enjoy the moment more and take photos less. But I knew I would write about them and would want photos to share with you.
As I continued my walk, I kept thinking about those trees. I was overwhelmed with their beauty, because they were so unique. I knew there was a metaphor in there somewhere.
What finally came to mind are people who feel self-conscious because they are different from others in some way. Maybe it’s how they act, how they see the world, or perhaps, how they look. They may feel "less than" others because of how they are different.
If that describes any of you, I want to shout from the rooftops how special you are. How I celebrate you!
How fantastic it is that we are not all made alike, and that we can delight in one another, because of our differences. Our points of uniqueness don’t have to be a point of shame and an urge to withdraw or hide.
If we can feel like our differences are special and embrace them, the world around us will have permission to embrace and celebrate us as well.
We teach others how to treat us. Our own confidence levels give people specific instruction for how to perceive us. Their opinion of us starts with our opinion of us.
How is your opinion of yourself today? Are you struck by how awesome you are? If not, please take a second look.
Find out what’s beautiful and unique about you. Externally, internally, spiritually, occupational, creatively ... There are so many ways that you are uniquely you, in a way that no one else could be.
Begin to cultivate your own sense of wonder about the unique creature that is you. Share that confident light with the world, so that we have permission and are awakened to the specific ways to celebrate you also.
